Much of Florida is Dry

Although we've had some rain this week, my part of Florida is very dry and this is true of much of the state.   It's so dry that the lack of water is affecting the water birds that live here of visit here during the winter.   I don't know if we will sell our little flock of sandhill cranes this winter.

I'm finally joining the iPad lovers.    For months, I've thought about how I'd use the iPad in ways that I wouldn't necessarily use a computer.   I've also been interested in digital subscriptions to some of my favorite magazines.   Another consideration was the Square card reader for those occasions when someone wants to make a purchase out of the blue.

At any rate I put all those things together and decided to get an iPad.   So far I've entered my email accounts and  subscribed to a couple of my favorite jewelry magazines.   The Square is on order.

Stay tuned!!

Vivid Yellow Diamond

Professional recently reported on a fabulous diamond that will be auctioned by Christie's:
"Cristie's New York will host a jewellry and gem auction in October, headed by a 32.77 carat
vivid yellow fancy diamond estimated to sell for more than $6 million.  The Vivid Yellow, as it has
been named, is a rare highly saturated vivid yellow diamond. The yellow hue of this large pear-shaped diamond is so intense that GIA ranks it among the rarest of gemstones in its class."

August Birthstones

There are several possible birthstone choices for the month of August:   peridot, carnelian, sardonyx,  diamond, or sapphire - the choice depends on which "birthstone list" you are reading!   Personally, I really like all of the possible choices, so let me tell you a little bit about each one, then you can decide which you like the best.

Peridot is an ancient gemstone with a rich bright yellow green color.    It's a fairly hard stone.  Peridot is thought to attract love and to soothe the nerves.

Carnelian is another ancient stone - known and used since Biblical times.   Carnelian is a form of chalcedony.  The red color comes from iron impurities.   Carnelian is thought to increase energy and to protect the wearer from evil.

Sardonyx is a banded stone known from ancient times and occuring in either red/white or black/white.

Sapphire - Blue sapphire is the most popular color, but sapphires occur in a wide range of colors from colorless to pink, also purple , yellow, orange, brown, and even green.

Diamond is the hardest of known stones and the rarest.  diamonds are available in a wide assortment of colors and colored diamonds are very popular right now.  Diamond is thought to encourage hope and to promote healing.

A Midnight Delight!

I have owned a night blooming cereus for many years.  In the last few years we've been away when it bloomed, but this year we're home to see it.   It only blooms at night.

The first photo shows a flower bud that will open once it gets dark.  The flowers look like giant Christmas cactus blossoms.

Tips to Keep Your Jewelry Looking Good

Your jewelry needs to be clean to look its best.   Jade, turquoise, malachite, tourmaline, pearls, opals, and lapis are among softer more porous stones that should not be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner or soaked in jewelry cleaner solutions – just wipe off with damp soft cloth and air dry.  In fact, it’s not a good idea to soak your jewelry regardless of the metal or stones involved.   Stones such as those listed above require extra careful treatment.  You should avoid using hot water on these stones, too.   If more cleaning is required try wiping off with soapy water on a soft cloth.   Dry thoroughly.

Avoid exposure to household cleaners and chemicals that can damage your jewelry.  Remove your jewelry before dealing with chemicals. Pearls and other porous stones can obviously be damaged by the chemicals, but even karat gold can be discolored by chemical exposure (chlorine, for example), even something like a soak in a hot tub.  Use rubbing alcohol to remove grease from karat gold.  Remove earrings when you have your hair done, especially if you are having it colored.

Apply all of your cosmetics, make-up, hair spray, and perfume before putting on your jewelry.  Remove bracelets and rings before applying hand lotions and creams.   Remember that you should remove your jewelry before working in the garden or engaging in other physical labor, exercising, swimming, bathing, etc.
Finally, please don’t just toss your jewelry into a jewelry box or drawer - your pieces will scratch each other.    Jewelry often comes in a protective bag or box and you should store your jewelry in these boxes and bags or flat in a plastic bag in a clean dark dry place.  Store pearls in soft bags away from other jewelry which might scratch the pearl’s surface.  Store your silver jewelry in tarnish resistant bags.

Summertime in Florida

I love turquoise.   The lovely blue color makes feel cool and serene.    Cooler anyway.   It's so humid right now that there's water running down the windows and outside walls on some mornnings.   Once the sun has been out for awhile, the moisture goes away, but it's pretty soggy.

Here's a link to one of my favorite turquoise pieces:

Rain in North Florida

Florida has been tinder dry for weeks now with wildfires burning in many places.   According to a friend in the fire service, there are a large number of fires burning now.   We haven't had any significant rain and the lightening associated with the thunderstorms has sparked many new fires.

Yesterday afternoon we finally had some significant rain and the plants got a much needed soaking.   This morning the humidity is so high that there's water literally running down the windows!  It's the first day this year with this humidity level.   Let's hope it keeps on raining.

Wild Fires in Florida

I'm reading about the terrible fires in Arizona.   I really feel for the people whose property and livelihood are being affected by this.

Florida is very dry and there are also many wildfires here, although nothing to compare with the situation in Arizona.   Pray for success for all the firefighters who are battling these blazes.

Rainforest Jasper

I love the name of this stone - rainforest jasper - and the visual image it creates in my mind. This lovely necklace combines jasper nuggets in various shades of green that blend with browns and reds. They really remind me of the tropical rainforest with towering trees and lots of ferns. The Rainforest Jasper nuggets are accented with vermeil bead caps and spacers (vermeil is 24kt gold over sterling silver). The overall length is 18 inches. The pendant is a rainforest jasper cabochon (18x25) wrapped in 14/20 gold-filled wire. The overall length is 2-1/2" x 1" wide. The pendant is set off with a corrugated vermeil bead on either side of the bale with a smaller gold bead in the center of the bale. Matching earrings are included (about 2 inches long).

Here's a link to the piece in my Etsy store:

Tips for Your Wedding and Reception

According to wedding planners, nine months is about the average time required to plan your wedding. You may choose to hire a wedding planner, but you can do everything yourself if you pay attention to the details. There are a number of good checklist type wedding planning guides available. These checklists can be invaluable. Using a lead time of 6-9 months, list all the things that need to be done and prioritize them

First on the list – how much money will you want to spend? Create a budget that will cover at least the “must have” things. If you’re trying to economize, add in other things one at a time and look at how they affect the overall cost.   You must choose a wedding date, of course, and it doesn’t hurt to have some alternative dates, too.

How many guests will be invited? The number of guests will affect where you hold your wedding and reception as well as the overall costs for catering, etc. Are you going to have a “destination wedding” that will require travel or will you be getting married close to home? Booking a wedding venue, arranging for entertainment, and securing a caterer generally require making arrangements months in advance – more than a year ahead for many venues. If you plan an outdoor wedding and/or reception, be sure to make alternative plans to allow for inclement weather. Make arrangements for everything you can book in advance – flowers, cake, photographer, etc. Choose colors for your wedding, pick out wedding outfits, and your dress. Get friends to help you with some of the details.

Spring is Coming - Happy Valentines Day

Happy Valentines Day!

After several weeks of less than optimal weather (for Florida), spring is finally here!  Maple trees are covered in red flowers, the redbuds are blooming, and it's relatively warm.   It's a welcome contrast to dreary rainy chilly weather earlier this month.

As a tribute to spring, I'm showing lovely vintage and handmade gemstone jewelry for Valentines Day.   The white enamel necklace and matching bracelet evoke spring with a shower of white flowers, each set with a tiny rhinestone.   The earrings shown are handmade in faceted Swarovski crystals with a faceted rose quartz briolette in the center.

We have two cats, affectionately know as the "Blues Brothers" for their blue eyes.  They are constantly together - playing and sleeping.  Here are two shots of them, first as kittens and as they are now.

I've recently learned something about cat behaviors that I never knew.  One of the cats had to have some minor surgery.  He was away for most of one day and when he returned it was as if his brother had never laid eyes on him.   The "hissy fits" and spitting, etc., have gone on for more than 48 hours now, although I think it's getting better.   This afternoon they have consented to lie on the same bed about 3 feet apart.  Hopefully tomorrow they will be curled up together again.

Ground Fog

I just happened to catch this unusual shot - ground fog spreading across the area behind our house at dusk.   Very strange to see - I haven't observed this before.

Gemstone Earrings

Since the beginning of 2011, I've been working hard to update my website,  I've created sub-categories for necklaces, earrings, and all the other categories.  Now it's easier to locate what you're looking for without a lot of fuss.   These Tourmaline earrings are an example, and there are lots of other gemstone earrings (and pearl earrings, too) on the website.
