Copper Flowers Part II

As an experiment, I cut some “flowers” out of 24 ga sheet copper – 2 smaller ones for earrings and a larger flower for a pendant. I smoothed the edges of all of the pieces with files and sandpaper and drilled holes for wires that will carry beads and attach to the ear wires.  Then I did some texturing with a hammer followed by shaping each of the flowers over miniature stakes.  Next, I curved the “petal tips” so they are rounded upwards.

I learned instantly that I will have to have a better work surface for texturing (and probably also for forming).   My texturing did not go deep enough and you can barely see any of it after the forming process.   Also, I think I should cut the petals in closer to the center hole so the flower will form more smoothly when the “petals” are curved over the stakes.

I’m currently living and working out of an RV.   It’s not a new experience - I’ve done this a lot in the past when we were traveling, but now that I’ve changed my designs to include more texturing, forming, and soldering and much less wire, I’m discovering that my work area is not as simple as it once was.   I’m going to have to develop new approaches for my work area to allow for hammering, etc.  An interesting aspect of where we happen to be staying right now – no picnic tables!   I planned to work outside on a sturdy surface and there is none!  Now I need to come up with a sturdy portable work surface.

Just Listed on Etsy and On Sale!

Just listed! A one of a kind set of dichroic glass scarab earrings and pendant.

I fell in love with the scarabs and wanted to use them in a simple but elegant design. The pendant is 35x20 and the earrings are about 18x15. Both are set in sterling silver. The pendant is on a 16 inch sterling chain. The earrings are about 2 inches long, including the sterling earwires.

$199 for the set - On Sale!

Diana Kirkpatrick-Art You Can Wear | My Thoughts on Jewelry & Design

Diana Kirkpatrick-Art You Can Wear | My Thoughts on Jewelry & Design: Designing Woven Silver Jewelry Posted on March 25, 2012 by Diana Kirkpatrick at

The bracelet on the left is woven from fine silver. The Swarovski rhinestones are set in sterling silver and added one at a time as the weaving progresses. I love designing these pieces, doing the weaving, and constructing pendants and bracelets with woven accents and details. These jewelry pieces sort of evolve from the basic structure I drew out in my design layout and this evolutionary process delights me. I sometimes alter the pattern a bit to include a special element or stone that seems to belong in the piece. Most of my pieces are small pendants wrapped in a woven band so that they often appear to float in their setting. I’m constructing the woven bands from 18-20 gauge fine silver and the weaving is done with 26-30 gauge.

As my hands have become more arthritic I’ve been working with elements under 14 gauge. My most recent designs include woven areas within a design like the cross shown on the right.

Copper Flowers

I'm starting a project in copper that will hopefully translate to silver at a later date.  These flowers will be textured and shaped.   The two small ones become earrings and the larger one will be a matching pendant.

Carnelian and Agate Necklace

One of my favorite pendants is this agate in gold wire.   I've put it on a carnelian and agate necklace that really pops the colors out.

I just downloaded the iChromy browser to my iPad2.  I think I'm going to like it a lot better than Safari, but we'll see. It's not quite the same as my PC when it comes to editing.

Here's a link to a lovely pendant that's presently being shown at the Artisans' Guild Gallery.

Rock Crystal Ring

I've just listed a sterling silver and faceted rock crystal ring.

Design Change??

I have a question:

Earlier, I used to use a watermark Blogger design in earth tones and I'm considering returning to that.  Several months ago I changed to my present black background design.  In the design I'm currently using my text appears everywhere else (via RSS) highlighted on a black background.   I do the highlighting in blog entries in order to have my text readable on the blog.

Am I missing something?    My earlier black background design did not require this.  Any comments?
